How to play truth or dare

Players take turns. On your turn, you choose truth or dare. A truth is a question you answer honestly. A dare is a short task you do right away, where you are. You need two or more players. The generator keeps track of whose turn it is:

  1. Add every player's name, in the order you are sitting.
  2. The player whose turn it is says "truth" or "dare" and taps that tab.
  3. Press Generate and read the prompt out loud.
  4. The player answers the truth or does the dare.
  5. The next player picks a tab and presses Generate. Their name shows above the prompt.
  6. Keep going as long as you like. When every prompt in your filters has come up, a new round starts and the generator tells you.

Truth questions

A good truth is fun to answer and easy to tell a story about. It should make the group laugh or learn something, not put anyone on the spot. Here are eight from different groups:

  • What is the worst job you have ever had?
  • What is your favorite family tradition?
  • Which friend here is most likely to become famous, and for what?
  • Have you ever fallen asleep during a video call?
  • What is the most awkward thing that has happened to you at a party?
  • What is the most embarrassing nickname you have ever had?
  • What quality makes you like someone right away?
  • What did your younger self think you would be doing by now?

Dares you can do at home

Every dare in the generator works at home with nothing extra. Each one takes 2 minutes or less. A few favorites:

  • Invent a nickname for everyone in the group
  • Give a toast to this group with a pretend glass
  • Lead the whole family in 30 seconds of stretching
  • Do your best victory celebration as if you just won a gold medal
  • Review the chair you are sitting on like a fancy critic
  • Describe your own outfit like a red carpet host
  • Pretend you are explaining to aliens how a TV remote works
  • Give a tour of your room in a nature documentary voice

Passing and house rules

Anyone can pass, with no reason needed. Agree on that before the first turn, and the game stays fun for everyone. When a player passes, press Generate and the turn moves on.

Some house rules groups like:

  • Two passes per player per game, for groups that want a challenge.
  • A player who passes on a dare takes a truth on their next turn.
  • Answers stay in the room. Nobody repeats a truth outside the game.
  • Nobody adds to a dare. You do the dare as written, or you pass.

What our dares never include

Truths stay clean too. Adults (clean) covers grown up topics like work, money mistakes and dating stories, with nothing explicit.

Every dare here is clean and can be done right where you are. We write and review each one by hand. Our dares never include:

  • Anything explicit or sexual.
  • Spending money.
  • Touching another player.
  • Messaging or calling a real person outside the game.
  • Anything that takes longer than 2 minutes.
  • Leaving the room.

Truth or dare for kids, teens and adults

Each group has its own truths and dares, so pick the one that matches your players. Playing with mixed ages? Pick the youngest player's group.

For a kids' party, pick Kids with Easy. The dares are about moving, making faces and pretending, so younger players can join in right away. Teens and adults can mix Friends and Party for a bigger pool.

  • Kids: animals, superpowers and silly faces. Dare: "Walk like a penguin across the room and back."
  • Teens: school, apps and secret crushes. Truth: "Which app do you spend way too much time on?"
  • Family: for a family night with all ages. Dare: "Pretend you are the parent and give everyone a bedtime speech."
  • Friends: shared memories and group dares. Truth: "Who here would you call first in an emergency?"
  • Party: dance moves, toasts and performances. Dare: "Teach the group a dance move from any decade."
  • Video call: dares that use your camera and the things around you.
  • Adults (clean): jobs, money and dating stories, with nothing explicit. Dare: "Pitch a terrible business idea as if it will change the world."

Tips for a better game night

Start on Easy while people warm up, then move to Medium or Deep once everyone is laughing. Deep truths ask for more honesty, and deep dares take a little more nerve.

Playing in a living room? Put the generator on a TV or laptop with Full screen on so everyone can read the prompt. The counter next to Generate shows how many prompts are left this round, so you know when to wrap up.

Found a prompt your group loved? Press Save to keep it for next time. Saved prompts and your history stay in this browser only, and Clear removes them.

Playing truth or dare online or over text

On a video call, pick Video call. These dares use what is on camera, like "Show the group the strangest object within arm's reach." One person shares their screen with Full screen on and presses Generate each turn.

Over text, truths work best, since nobody can see a dare. Press Share to send the prompt: on a phone it opens your share menu, and on a computer it copies a link. Your friends open the link and see the same prompt. You can also press Copy and paste the text into the chat.

Truth or dare for couples

There is no couples category, and the game stays clean. For two people, Adults (clean) and Friends work well. For questions about your relationship, use For couples on the random question generator.

Can't decide between truth and dare? Spin the yes or no wheel: yes means truth, no means dare.

Questions and answers

How do you play truth or dare?

Players take turns choosing truth or dare. A truth is a question you answer honestly, and a dare is a short task you do on the spot. Add your players above and the generator tracks whose turn it is.

What are good truth questions?

Ones that are fun to answer, like "What is the most fun thing we have done together?" or "What is a song you secretly love but would never admit to?" Pick a group to match your players.

What are good dares to do at home?

Quick ones that need nothing, like "Lip-sync the chorus of a song the group picks" or "Do 10 jumping jacks while counting out loud." Every dare here can be done where you are.

Can you play truth or dare over text or online?

Yes. On a video call, pick Video call and share your screen. Over text, stick to truths and press Share or Copy to send each prompt.

Is this truth or dare okay for kids and teens?

Yes. Nothing here is explicit, and no dare costs money, involves touching anyone or messages a real person. Pick Kids or Teens for prompts written for those ages.

What are good truth or dare questions for couples?

Try Adults (clean) and Friends, like "What is your most awkward first date story, in general terms?" For relationship questions, use For couples on the random question generator.

What if someone does not want to answer or do a dare?

They pass, no reason needed. Press Generate and the turn moves to the next player. Agree on this rule before you start.

Is it free, and are names saved?

Yes, it's free with no sign up. Player names are not saved, and we don't store what you draw.
