Icebreaker questions for work and team meetings

The For work category has 51 questions that are safe to ask a coworker you barely know, like "What was your first job ever?" or "What is your favorite snack to keep at your desk?". They are about work habits, tools and small daily choices, not about salary, health or family.

For a weekly meeting, set Difficulty to Easy and ask one question at the start. Each person answers in a sentence or two, so ten people take about five minutes. Save Deep questions for a team offsite or a retro where people have more time. "Who has inspired you most in the way you work or live?" from Icebreakers is a good one there.

New team members can use the Icebreakers category too. Its 52 questions, like "Coffee, tea, or neither?" or "What is the best thing you ate this week?", work for any group of adults who just met.

Icebreaker questions for kids and students

The For kids category has 54 questions about animals, pets, school and made-up powers, such as "What is your favorite animal, and why?" and "If you could fly, where would you go first?". A child can answer them without feeling put on the spot.

In class, press Full screen so everyone can read the question, then go around the room. On the first day of school, stick to Easy: 28 of the kids questions are Easy. For older students, mix in Icebreakers and For friends.

Icebreaker questions for adults and friends

The For friends category has 52 questions for a group that already knows each other a little, like "Which friend picks the best movies for a group night?" or "What is your favorite memory of us hanging out?". They work at a dinner, on a road trip or in a group chat.

For adults who just met, start with Icebreakers on Easy, then move to Medium once people are laughing. A question like "What is something you changed your mind about recently?" lands better after a few lighter ones.

Funny icebreaker questions

This page keeps to questions most groups can answer comfortably. For sillier ones, like "What animal would be the rudest if it could talk?", open the Funny category in our random question generator. It also has What if questions, which make good warm ups for a creative team.

How to run an icebreaker that doesn't feel forced

Most icebreakers fail because they run too long or ask too much too soon. A few habits help:

  • Answer first yourself. A short, honest answer shows people how long and how personal to go.
  • Keep it to one question per meeting, and one or two sentences per person.
  • Let people pass. Anyone can say "pass" and the next person goes.
  • Match the depth to the group. Use Easy with strangers and save Deep for people who already trust each other.
  • Use a follow-up only when someone seems happy to say more. Talking points gives you two or three to choose from.

Icebreakers for virtual meetings

On a video call, share your screen with the tool in Full screen, or press Copy and paste the question into the meeting chat. People can type their answers in the chat if the group is large, which saves time and lets quieter people join in.

To plan a week of meetings, set How many to 5 and press Copy all. Press Save on questions that went well so you can find them later under Saved.

Questions and answers

What are good icebreaker questions?

Good icebreaker questions are easy to answer in a sentence and don't ask for anything private. "Coffee, tea, or neither?", "What is the best thing you ate this week?" and "What was your first job ever?" all work. The generator has 209 like these.

What are good icebreaker questions for work?

Ask about work habits and small choices, not salary, health or family. Try "What is your go to lunch on a busy day?" or "Are you a desk organized or desk chaotic person?". Pick the For work category for all 51.

What are good icebreaker questions for kids?

Questions about animals, pets, school and superpowers work well, like "If you could have any pet in the world, what would it be?". Choose the For kids category and set Difficulty to Easy.

How long should an icebreaker take?

For a regular meeting, about five minutes: one question, a sentence or two from each person. A longer activity fits a first day, a workshop or an offsite.

How do I pick questions everyone is comfortable answering?

Start with Easy questions, answer first yourself, and let anyone pass. Move to Medium or Deep only with a group that already knows each other.

Will I get the same question twice?

Not within a round. The tool shows how many questions are left for your filters, and starts a new round once you have seen them all.

Is it free?

Yes. It's free, runs in your browser and needs no sign up. We don't store the questions you draw. Your history and saved questions stay in your own browser.
